What is “World-Class” Learning Facilitation?

Asia Gwatkin, Learning and Development Lead, Amplity Health

Here at Amplity, our learning facilitators are often asked how they got to be so good at what they do. Think about it: we have all experienced that moment when a teacher, speaker, or group leader inspired us to strive for excellence. This can involve creating an environment in which everyone feels excited and ready to participate, helping participants reach beyond themselves, or just knowing the right thing to do or say in any given situation. This is what Amplity’s facilitators do every day.

But are they world class facilitators? And how do we begin to find out?

A survey by Learning, an online training company, showed that only 12% of employees apply new skills learned in training for their job. This glaring statistic means that many people attending development programs are not getting what they want and need. To get value for money and return on investment, the time spent in live learning environments needs to be maximized, and the primary determinant of that value is the facilitator.

Most of us would agree that great facilitation is easy to recognize but difficult to define. In fact, whether facilitation skills can ever be characterized as “world class” will remain debatable in the absence of agreed measures. Nevertheless, we continue to strive for learning excellence.

Amplity has a global team of facilitators who work with clients around the world. We have been in the learning business for decades, and we have developed our own view of what world class facilitation looks like. Each year we help over 10,000 global pharmaceutical field professionals develop their skills in becoming more impactful, memorable, and credible. We understand the theory behind individual and organizational development, which enables us to create learning interventions and journeys that engage participants and achieve sustainable change.

Our facilitators use a range of techniques that stimulate individuals to make immediate alterations to their thinking and behavior. For example, our facilitators can seamlessly transition between teaching, training, and coaching. They give delegates a deeply immersive experience and ensure contextual learning is experienced by all attendees. They respond to the needs of the group and the individual.

We create an experiential learning environment, encouraging attendees to step out of their comfort zone. We encourage participants to understand their own strengths so they can be grown, and to stretch themselves to explore new ways of working.

Of course, outcomes measurement is crucial. Amplity uses a personalized tool that tracks each learner’s progress on an ongoing basis. It uses AI to generate insights and reports at all levels and extends the learning period by embedding it into an individual’s day-to-day working pattern.

Looking forward, our view of world class facilitation will continue to evolve as the standards and requirements are raised. Keeping pace requires a constant renewal of skills and an appetite to embrace change. The Amplity team understands that in order to ever be considered world class, we must first aspire to be and think in that way. That is why we have created a capability framework for world class facilitation that we use and evolve internally.

With our commitment to learning excellence, it is easy to see why so many of the people who attend our programs assess our facilitators as “world class.” Interested in learning more about our Learning and Development processes? Visit Amplity Virtual Learning Solutions.
